MATERIAL AND CULTURE
9/7/12 to 9/9/12
MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House, 835 N. Kings Rd, West Hollywood
Artist and architect Kostis Velonis produced a body of work in direct response to his research into R.M. Schindler's 1949 Janson House, the work of its owner, modernist poet Ellen Janson, and the romance between the architect and the poet. Beginning his project with a simple interest in the design of two chairs – Schindler's Kings Road House sling chair and his similar Janson House chair – Velonis reached out to scholars around Los Angeles, visited the University of California Santa Barbara R.M. Schindler Archive, and spent hours reading through Janson's poetry and the couple's correspondence trying to get a full picture of what he posited as a truly symbiotic relationship. Velonis's historical pursuits were presented through both collected ephemera and newly produced sculptures.
